How We Tested

We ran 60 structured cleaning sessions over 10 weeks in a 1,400 sq ft apartment with a mix of engineered hardwood, low-pile carpet runner, and ceramic tile. Each session used the same standardized debris load: 10g of fine baking flour, 5g of rice, and 5g of pet hair (collected from a Labrador). We weighed debris before and after each session to calculate pickup efficiency.

Laser Detection: Actually Useful

The green laser mounted on the cleaner head illuminates dust and fine debris that's completely invisible under normal lighting. This isn't a gimmick — it genuinely changes cleaning behavior. In our sessions, we routinely found significant debris accumulation in areas that looked clean to the naked eye. The laser made us clean more thoroughly simply by showing us what was there.

The piezo sensor (which counts particles and categorizes them by size on the LCD screen) is more of a novelty — we found ourselves checking it occasionally but it doesn't change how you vacuum. The laser is the feature that matters.

Suction & Debris Pickup

Pickup efficiency across all 60 sessions averaged 97.3% of our standardized debris load — the highest we've recorded for a cordless vacuum. On Boost mode, the V15 out-performed several corded uprights we've tested. The anti-tangle Hair Screw tool handled pet hair without clogging across the entire test period.

Battery Life: The Real Numbers

Dyson claims up to 60 minutes. In our tests on Auto mode (the mode most people will use), we measured 48–52 minutes depending on surface type. On Boost mode (maximum suction), that drops to 18–22 minutes. The LCD screen shows remaining battery as a countdown in minutes, which is genuinely useful for planning a full-home clean.

Who Should Buy This?

Buy the Dyson V15 if: You want the best cordless vacuum available, you have multiple floor types, and you have pets or allergy concerns that demand proper HEPA filtration.

Consider alternatives if: Budget is a concern — the Dyson V11 at $499 offers 90% of the performance, and the Shark IZ462H at $280 is a legitimate budget pick for hardwood-only homes.

Our Verdict

8.7/10
★★★★½

The Dyson V15 Detect is the best cordless vacuum we've tested. The laser detection is genuinely useful (not a gimmick), the suction is exceptional, and the HEPA filtration is real. The price is hard to justify unless cleaning performance matters to you — but if it does, this is the benchmark.
